A great read. All or at least most of the trucks at the Freedumb Convoy were older trucks that pre-date emission control systems. The protests were never about covid mandates: They were about resistance to progressive change.

Deep thanks for this piece, for the lines you draw, the connections you make between personal heartbreak and the crushing force of corporate-control of our cities and towns. Also for the reminder of, as you say, "how bad things truly are, and how much good remains." I'm in San Francisco, California and just learned of the Rest from a poet, Sean Singer, in his Substack, the Sharpener. I will share and support your work among the people in my tiny circle out here on the far west end of U.S.

THANK YOU! For this article, for the show, for your truth telling! I grew up in Peace River, Alberta in the 1960's and remember when the Gov't came up with the Heritage Fund - stating that the money would be used to Transition OUT of the oil industry BECAUSE of the KNOWN environmental harms.... There is now 18 BILLION dollars in that fund.... and not a penny has been spent of transitioning to a green economy and moving oil patch workers and 'rig pigs" as they called themselves to other jobs. If you look at the web site it says it's earmarked for Health...... while our health is threatened directly by the Tar Sands.

How can it be that the collective memory is not demanding this be done? It was the social agreement that was made with the public. Public permission was given on these terms - which have not come to be. That was over 40 years ago and we are now IN the Climate Crisis - it's not looming on the horizon like it was back then - when they would admit it. Somewhere along the line, they ignored these admissions and promises that "They" would take responsibility to not let it go too far... but here we are - the owners of a new pipeline for BITCHemen. Shameless and shameful.

Thank you for the Truth and Forgiveness you expressed in your piece. I listened to the interview and appreciate the honesty with which you express the bumps and bruises you felt in your life. Also, that there is a sense of gratitude in your words and attitude towards life as it presents itself to you.

I have to hold off on my wanting to assist The Rest by supporting in a monetary way. I had to wrestle with myself and still ended up saying, No, for now. Thank you, Tanya, for everything you are and do.
